Change the route before the gear
The best heat strategy is a cooler day, shorter route, shaded trail, higher elevation, or sunrise start. Water and clothing cannot make every route safe.
Use the hourly forecast
A daily high hides the timing of dangerous heat. Include the drive, parking, approach, exposed section, and return when choosing a start.
Pace and cool deliberately
Move below maximum effort, take short shade breaks, wear light breathable coverage, protect the head and skin, and eat even when heat reduces appetite.
Recognize heat illness
Heavy sweating, weakness, headache, cramps, nausea, and dizziness require immediate cooling and reassessment. Confusion, collapse, or seizure is an emergency.
Turn around while everyone feels capable

Heat illness can progress while the group is still deciding. Vehicle logistics are part of heat safety. A closed car can become dangerously hot, and a remote trailhead may offer no shade while the group waits for a shuttle, tow, or delayed companion. Carry extra water that remains at the vehicle, verify the road and gate schedule, and avoid leaving vulnerable people or animals in the car. When the forecast exceeds the group's established experience, replace the hike with a shorter shaded walk or an indoor plan. There is no acclimatization benefit in pushing through symptoms or exposing a first-time visitor to the day's most severe conditions.
